The management of hardware repair and maintenance tasks is a key function of any technology department. Inefficiency in this area produces frustration and lost hours of productive work time. SmartEDU has an online "help desk" application called TSS (Technology Support System) that's worth seeing.

All hardware problems can be reported from anywhere, and by anybody, in the district. The person assigned to the help desk receives the reported problems online and can quickly assign the tasks to their technicians electronically. The technicians resolve the problems, record what they've done, and statistics are kept on all work done for administrative reporting. Also, a district can record, and continuously update, its entire hardware inventory online. DOE statistics on "types of computers" are also managed on this system.
